Are We In Control Of Our Decisions?
Dan Ariely is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight. He is the author of the bestsellers Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty. Through his research and his experiments, he questions the forces that influence human behavior and the irrational ways in which we often all behave. In his ted talk filmed December 2008 the behavioral economist Dan Ariely, uses classic visual illusions and his own counter-intuitive research findings to show how we're not as rational as we think when we make decisions.
In class on Friday October 23, 2015 we discussed about an excerpt from Douglas Coupland discussing the common inference that all older people have more intelligence and wisdom than someone of the the younger age. In my opinion this is a totally false accusation due that elders form all around the world can be found doing the harm of the worst states which mean that everyone is just different. Ariely man argument was found in this statement by him, "Something we don't have an evolutionary reason to do, we don't have a specialized part of the brain for, and we don't do that many hours of the day. The argument is in those cases, it might be that we actually make many more mistakes. And worse -- not having an easy way to see them, because in visual illusions, we can easily demonstrate the mistakes; in cognitive illusion it's much, much harder to demonstrate the mistakes to" In his quote he is explaining that not all things we do as human use brain power. That we use "common sense" in some cases to get through certain situations. In those situations there might be some of your worst mistakes. Dan understands our limitations, and that we build around them. But for some reason, when it comes to the mental world, people design things like healthcare and retirement and stock markets, and somehow forget the idea that we are limited. Ariely also believed in the idea of cognitive disillusionment which is essentially mind tricks.
Personal Statement: In all ways i agree with Ariely's thought about the mental process. In this situation equality of the brain is what it really comes down to. Also, it all true about how the mind develops and at 25 years old your mind is fully developed. But in all it depends on how the person with brain uses it an if their common sense is used or not.
